As part of its ongoing work to engage voters ahead of the November elections, the ACLU of Wisconsin and the American Civil Liberties Union launched a statewide direct mail campaign to educate Wisconsinites about the candidates running for the state legislature in their district.

In addition to educational mailers sent by the ACLU, the ACLU of Wisconsin plans to reach voters through door-to-door canvassing and recruiting volunteers to mobilize people to vote. The ACLU has also produced a series of advertisements on radio stations across the state—and on digital radio—highlighting the candidates’ record on abortion rights.

The campaign will target Assembly Districts 21, 26, 53, 61, 85, and 89 for the state legislative races with robust voter education around abortion. The ACLU of Wisconsin also sent candidate questionnaires to all state Assembly and Senate candidates to gauge their positions on access to contraception and in vitro fertilization (IVF), classroom censorship, and marijuana legalization, among other critical issues.

“We know that during elections, voters may feel inundated with a lot of overwhelming information, but as a nonpartisan organization, we feel it is important that voters know where their candidates are on the issues that are most important to them and impact the future of Wisconsin,” said Dr. Melinda Brennan, executive director of the ACLU of Wisconsin. “Voters have immense power, and providing them information about the policies and viewpoints of their candidates is an important way to prepare voters to head to the ballot box in November. We know this election will have a massive impact on Wisconsin and the country, and we want voters to decide which representative best aligns with their views.”

Between the legislative work funded by the ACLU and the ACLU of Wisconsin and additional spending in the U.S. Senate race by the ACLU Voter Education Fund, a federal PAC, the organizations have invested $1.7m in this election cycle.
