The ACLU of Wisconsin is the state affiliate of the national ACLU and is a nonprofit, nonpartisan, private organization with more than 14,000 members, dedicated to defending the civil rights and liberties of all Wisconsinites. The ACLU uses public education, advocacy, and targeted litigation to help maintain and advance civil liberties, including freedoms of association, press, religion, and speech, as well as core civil rights, including voting rights, due process, and privacy rights, and the right to equal protection, for all people in Wisconsin.

During this limited term internship, the Systemic Equality Intern will assist in developing Know Your Rights training, organize, in collaboration with the community, around Know Your Rights Law Enforcement and provide training for Black youth and other historically excluded community members in Milwaukee to address the racial disparities in the criminal justice system.

The Systemic Equality Intern will oversee and lead interactive and accessible educational training paired with storytelling from people in the community followed by emotional support aftercare led by a BIPOC mental health and wellness expert. This Know Your Rights Tour will provide and support Black Wisconsinites and historically excluded people when interacting with law enforcement. Programming will also include resourcing and equipping staff from community centers and other gathering spaces where programming will be held, in order to continue to support students after trainings conclude.

Job Context

This position is a part-time, limited term non-exempt position. The Systemic Equality Intern is a part of the Community Engagement Department. The position is based in the Milwaukee area in a hybrid work environment (in-person and remote as necessary), the position responsibilities will require limited travel at the expense of the organization. Work may include some nights and weekends.

Compensation

Compensation is based on relevant experience and skills at an hourly rate of $18.36/hour. The approximate duration is approximately 40 weeks, approximately 10 hours per week and is ineligible for benefits.
