We are fortunate that Governor Evers vetoed every single anti-trans bill that made it onto his desk. The governor’s veto is a crucial firewall against legislation attacking LGBTQ+ rights.
Gender-Affirming Care Protected by Veto
Bills proposing to ban best-practice medical care for transgender youth experiencing gender dysphoria were passed during both the 2023-24 and 2025-26 legislative sessions. Thankfully, Governor Evers’ veto stopped these dangerous bills and safeguarded gender-affirming care access for Wisconsin kids.
In addition to opposition from leaders in the medical community stating these bills are harmful and an invasion into ethical medical practice, there is also a strong risk that these bills illegally discriminate against trans people.
Gender-affirming care bans are part of a nationwide coordinated effort to deny transgender people their freedom, safety, and dignity. In 2025, over 600 anti-LGBTQ bills were introduced in statehouses across the country.
All Anti-Trans Bills Vetoed So Far
Here is a list of all of the anti-trans bills that Governor Evers has vetoed:
- 2023 AB 377/SB 378 and 2025 AB 100/SB 117: Anti-Trans Sports Bill (K-12 Schools)
- 2025 AB 102/SB 116: Anti-Trans Sports Bill (College)
- 2025 AB 103/SB 120: Denying Preferred Names and Pronouns in Schools
- 2023 AB 465/SB 480 and 2025 AB 104/SB 157: Trans Youth Gender-Affirming Care Ban
- 2025 AB 400/SB 405: Lawsuits Regarding Gender-Affirming Care
He further protected bodily autonomy for Wisconsin’s youth by vetoing a bill that would have broadened parental access to minors’ health records by removing existing privacy carve-outs. For instance, under the bill parents would gain access to mental health treatment records for developmentally disabled youth even if they file a written objection, as well as access to HIV testing records for all youth.
Patients and their doctors should be trusted to make private medical decisions, not politicians. The government should not force teachers to out students, subject women and girls to invasive sex testing just to play sports, or overreach into trans people’s lives.
We are glad that Governor Evers used his veto to stop all of these nightmare scenarios.
More Than Trans Rights At Stake
The Governor of Wisconsin has the power to defend against bills that infringe on our civil rights and liberties, or sign them into law.
Not only did Governor Evers stop attacks on trans rights, his veto also stood in the way of other harmful bills that would have forced local sheriffs to do ICE’s bidding, curtailed free speech, instituted a modern-day poll tax, and more.
Wisconsin families deserve the freedom to love and support their child, transgender or not. Every state should be a safe place to raise every family.
