MADISON (AP) – A gay Wisconsin couple that sued to overturn the state’s gay marriage ban is elated that a federal appeals court has found the prohibition unconstitutional.

Johannes Wallmann and Keith Borden of Madison joined seven other gay couples in challenging the ban in federal court. U.S. District Judge Barbara Crabb struck the ban down in June but Republican Attorney General J.B. Van Hollen asked the 7th Circuit Court of Appeals to overturn her decision.

The 7th Circuit refused on Thursday, agreeing that the ban is unconstitutional and gay married couples are just like any other couple.

Wallmann and Borden married in Canada but their union hasn’t been recognized in Wisconsin. Wallmann called the 7th Circuit ruling huge and he and Borden are elated with it.
