Freedom of Religion

The ACLU strives to safeguard the First Amendment’s guarantee of religious liberty by ensuring that laws and governmental practices neither promote religion nor interfere with its free exercise.

Freedom of Speech and Association

Protecting free speech means protecting a free press, the democratic process, diversity of thought, and so much more. The ACLU has worked since 1920 to ensure that freedom of speech is protected for everyone.

Immigrants' Rights/Derechos de los Inmigrantes

The fundamental constitutional protections of due process and equal protection embodied in our Constitution and Bill of Rights apply to every person, regardless of immigration status.  When the government has the power to deny legal rights and due process to one vulnerable group, everyone’s rights are at risk.

LGBT Rights

The ACLU works to ensure that lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people can live openly without discrimination and enjoy equal rights, personal autonomy, and freedom of expression and association.

Police, Prisons, and Criminal Law Reform

Imprisonment is a brutal and costly response to crime, which traumatizes incarcerated people and hurts families and communities. It should be the last option, not the first. Yet Wisconsin has the highest incarceration rate for Black men in the United States. Decades of bad policies have torn families apart and cost our state billions.

Privacy, Technology, and Liberty

The ACLU works to expand the right to privacy, increase the control individuals have over their personal information, and ensure civil liberties are being enchanced rather than compromised by technological innovation.

2021-2023 Budget Work

Wisconsin Governor Tony Evers recently introduced his 2021 biennial budget, laying the foundation for what our state will look like over the next two years.
