The Midterms Are Almost Here. Here’s What You Need to Know About Registering to Vote.

The 2026 midterm election on November 3rd is fast-approaching, so now is the time to make your plan to vote!

The first step in your voting journey is making sure you’re registered to vote. In Wisconsin, voters can register online, through the mail, and even in-person at the polls on Election Day. You won’t be able to vote unless you’re registered, so here’s what you need to do:

You are required to register if:

• You’ve never voted in Wisconsin before
• You’ve moved since the last time you voted in Wisconsin – even if you just moved across the street or to a new apartment in your building
• You changed your name (by marriage, divorce, etc.) since the last time you voted. (If you changed your name you must first update your name IN PERSON at the Social Security Office and at the DMV. Then you can register to vote)
• You haven’t voted in four years or more (and have been taken off the voter registration rolls)
• You were taken off the voter registration rolls because of being convicted of a felony, and now you’re “off paper” and want to vote again.

• Online. You can register online until October 14th with a valid, unexpired Wisconsin driver’s license or DMV-issued Wisconsin ID. If the DMV doesn’t have your current address on file, update your address on the DMV website first.
• By Mail. You can register by mail until October 14th. Fill out & print the form, sign and mail it to your municipal clerk along with a proof of residence (POR) document that shows your name and current residential address. Find the address for your clerk here.
• At Your Municipal Clerk’s Office. You can register in person at the Municipal Clerk’s office or your early voting site until the Friday before an election. You’ll need to bring a proof of residence document (can be shown electronically).
• At the Polls on Election Day. You can register at the polls on Election Day. You will need to bring a proof of residence document (can be shown electronically). Find your polling place here.

All voters must provide proof of residence to register. If you register online, your valid Wisconsin driver’s license or Wisconsin ID card issued by the DMV qualifies as your valid proof of residence document.

If you register in-person or by mail, you must bring or include a proof of residence document. It must be a document with your first and last name and current residential address. These can include a recent utility bill, a lease (unless you register by mail), a Wisconsin driver’s license/state ID, and more.
