ACLU of Wisconsin Presents on Civil Liberties Issues in Education at 2004 WEAC Statewide Convention

September 9, 2004

Nichole Yunk and Patricia Briones, director and program associate of the ACLU of Wisconsin’s Youth & Civil Liberties Council, will present at the 2004 Wisconsin Education Association Council (WEAC) Convention on October 28 and 29, 2004 at the Alliant Energy Center in Madison, Wisconsin.

The presentation, entitled “Teaching Post-9/11: What Teachers Need to Know About How Federal Policies Influence Educational Practices”, will include an in-depth look at “No Child Left Behind” & the “USA PATRIOT Act”.

Today’s educational system faces unprecedented policy and legal challenges and public school teachers and administrators must balance the realities of deficits and results-based accountability standards with ever-evolving questions of nation, language and culture. Yunk and Briones will provide a framework through which teachers can examine how civil liberties interface with issues like up-to-date ESL and special education standards, status classifications and funding scales, student records and military recruitment access provisions.

The public education work of the Youth & Civil Liberties Council (YCLC) is nationally-recognized for its unique and innovative models of youth empowerment through rights awareness, responsibility and action. Most notable are its accredited programs The Other America Tour©, Youth Government Day and the Milwaukee Teen Tribunal. To learn more click here
