Legal Docket
The ACLU of Wisconsin Foundation (ACLU/WIF) is the public
education, advocacy and litigation arm of the ACLU in Wisconsin. Whenever
possible, the ACLU/WIF attempts to address civil liberties violations
or potential violations by means of advocacy methods short of litigation.
Our "strongly worded letters" to bureaucrats often do the trick.
But occasionally, out of the thousands of phoned and hundreds of written
complaints that we receive each year at our Milwaukee headquarters, the
ACLU/WIF must consider legal action. The Legal Director and staff review
complaints and make recommendations to the state board of the ACLU/WIF.
The State Board is ultimately responsible for deciding which complaints
will be referred to an ACLU/WIF cooperating attorney for representation.
Representation may be direct (i.e., the attorney's client is a party (plaintiff
or defendant) in a case). Or, the representation may be by means of an
amicus, or "friend of the court" brief on behalf of individuals
or organizations that have an interest in another party's lawsuit.
We have recently created a new format for presenting our legal docket online. You will now see the docket updated approximately 4 times annually and the four case types will all be in one .pdf document.
