Censorship of Student Performances & Unequal Treatment of Gay-Straight Alliance at Eau Claire Public High School

Description:

The principal at Eau Claire North High School requested that student directors of “Check Please” provide a written “justification” for the sexual orientation of a gay character. There had been allegations that the principal asked that the character’s sexual orientation be changed, and that he requested that another student-directed play, “Nobody Heard Me Cry,” be rewritten to eliminate an off-stage gunshot suggesting the suicide of a character. Finally, there were allegations that the principal was refusing to allow the Gay, Lesbian And Straight Support club (GLASS) participate in or promote a “day of silence” to call attention to anti-gay violence and homophobia.
