Professor Athan Theoharis with
the Eunice Z. Edgar Lifetime Achievement Award
Athan
Theoharis is an ACLU of WI/F Board Member and nationally recognized
expert on FOIA and FBI abuse.
Athan Theoharis is considered one of the foremost national experts
on FOIA, Spying, Torture, Special Rendition, the FBI, the NSA and Government
abuse of power. He has dedicated his lifetime to the supporting civil
liberties, freedom and personal privacy rights. A professor of
history at Marquette University, he is the author of or editor of A Culture
of Secrecy: The Government Versus the People’s Right to Know; The
Boss; From the Secret files of J. Edgar Hoover; J. Edgar Hoover, Sex,
and Crime; Beyond the Hiss Case; Spying on Americans; Seeds
of Repression; The Yalta Myths; The Specter; The Truman Presidency;
Anatomy of Anti-Communism; and The FBI: An Annotated Bibliography
and Research Guide. He has received numerous research grants and
awards, including a Gavel Award from the American Bar Association and
the Binkley-Stephenson Award from the Organization of American Historians.
Professor Theoharis has been a member of the ACLU of Wisconsin since
the mid-1970’s and he has been an invaluable member of the Board
of Directors since as the 1980’s. In a time of increased
U.S. Government surveillance and interference in the rights of the people
in the United States, Professor Theoharis’s lifetime of work has
an extra relevancy for all of our freedoms. The ACLU of Wisconsin
is proud to honor Professor Athan Theoharis’ lifelong dedication
to protecting our Constitution with knowledge and truth. |
